Foot Mobilisation Technique/s or FMT is a gentle, manual therapy, designed to treat the cause of foot, arch, heel and ankle pain without the need for  medication , surgery and frequently, expensive foot orthotics.

Joint mobilisation and manipulation are techniques which have been used as therapies by health professionals such as physiotherapists and chiropractors for many years however focusing  specifically on the foot as part of a podiatric approach is relatively new and is now a recognized approach to correcting foot function treating many causes of foot pain.

At Ashburnham Foot and Ankle Centre we are proud to be one of the first facilities in Canada to offer this unique approach to foot health management. We use a very specific approach to FMT:

  • First we perform a comprehensive assessment of foot and lower limb function to determine what  is causing the dysfunction and/or foot and leg pain
  • Develop a treatment plan based on the assessment which will usually involve x2 weekly appointments for a 3 week period.  These appointments  usually take about 10 minutes and are built around the patients busy schedule.
  • Each patient is given specific information on foot exercises which are designed to complement the mobilsation  techqnues and are essential to success – part of the “healthyfeet” program!
  • Other treatments (e.g.  strapping, ultrasound, footwear changes) may be incorporated into the management plan depending on the degree of pain and dysfunction experienced.
  • After 3 weeks you can typically expect a 30-50% improvement in function and symptoms at which point a decision is made as to whether to continue only with the exercise protocol at home as things continue to improve, continue with FMT and/or prescribe foot orthoses
  • Foot orthoses are only prescribed if absolutely necessary – approx. 60% of  patients  who complete the 3 week FMT treatment, DO NOT require foot orthoses.

Who can benefit from FMT?

Many people suffer from chronic foot pain or general discomfort as a result of poor foot function. Until the feet are working better through improved alignment and function, even foot orthotic devices may not resolve the issues completely. Better foot health through corrected alignment and strong muscles can make a significant difference.

Our patients who chose FMT have a wide range of foot problems including heel, arch and ankle pain. They are also very busy  balancing work ,family and recreational commitments.

Let us show you how your feet can benefit from FMT – by improving  your quality of life through healthy feet!
